Porthmadog`s dream start to the season (seven wins in seven) came to an abrupt and chastening end at the impressive Nantporth stadium in front of over a thousand paying guests. To the neutral and to the City fans, this was a great spectacle but to the most ardent Port followers, it was a difficult watch especially in the closing stages. Bangor, however, were full value for their fine win as Port were eventually turned over by a faster, sharper and stronger team.

The crowd had barely settled when Bangor went on the attack immediately and some indecision in the Port defence gave James Barry a clear shot at goal which he happily took as he side-footed expertly from twelve yards past Cooke`s despairing dive to put the citizens ahead with barely a minute on the clock.

Bangor remained in the ascendancy in territorial terms for most of the first period and were getting much joy down the right wing where Dylan Summers-Jones was a particular menace.

With quarter of an hour gone, Port started to settle somewhat and Dan Atkins managed to intercept an ill-judged back pass to gloveman Carl Jones. However, the hard-working striker was guilty of going it alone instead of passing to Shaun Cavanagh who was much better placed to score. Bangor continued with swift and skilful attacks while Port were playing the unaccustomed role of counter-attackers, and, it was from such a counter that Port equalized with a very good goal mid-way through the half. City`s Logan Williams saw yellow for an over-zealous challenge on the edge of the area. Shaun Cavanagh picked himself up and sent in a fine low shot which bounced awkwardly in front of Carl Jones before hitting the back of the net. 1-1 and all to play for.

Bangor continued to torment the Port rearguard down the flanks and from the umpteenth dangerous cross, this time by Cai Powell Roberts, journeyman striker Jamie Reed calmly slotted the ball into the roof of the net to give Bangor a 2-1 half-time lead.

Porthmadog started the second half in rather more promising fashion and a strong weaving attack by Danny Brookwell needed an equally strong block to prevent an equalizer. This was followed by a fine individual effort down the left by Dan Atkins which was partially halted by a cynical infringement by Carl Jones for which he was justly booked.

Going into the final 15 minutes, the game belonged largely to Bangor as the Port defenders had to deal with wave after wave of attacks. You felt that Bangor simply had to score to put the game to bed and this they did with three truly memorable goals. The first and second of these came from the feet of Tommy Creamer with a twenty five yard drive into the top left hand corner which caused an eruption in the Nantporth stadium. The second which came two minutes later defied normal adjectives. ‘Gobsmacking’ perhaps? Tommy Creamer found himself some 35 yards from goal when, with astonishing vision, he spotted Port custodian Josh Cooke off his line. His pin-point shot evaded the back-pedalling keeper and Creamer had completed a double that will live long in the memory. 4-1.

The referee found seven extra minutes from somewhere but it was in the 98th minute that substitute Jack Smith found the right hand corner of Cooke`s net with a truly immaculate daisy-cutter to round off a memorable night for Dinas Bangor 1876. As for Port, it will be league business again on Saturday afternoon when fellow league contenders Prestatyn Town visit Y Traeth (2:30 kick-off) . Fe ddaw haul ar fryn!
